[edit] Summary
Title: Triathlon Morning
Description: My digital story will narratively and visually describe the morning of my first triathlon. I wanted people to feel the anticipation and excitement that I felt on that morning. I wanted to describe in text and pictures the "brotherhood" of triathletes. Most triathletes do not know one another but we all support each other before, during and after the race. Most people see triathlons as just a sport but it is so much more than that. Triathlons are a test of ones' strength mentally and physically. All triathletes share similar personality traits. We are all competitive, we enjoy training, we all face our fears and we all enjoy the brief moments of friendship that we share with other triathletes. The main point of the story reflects the journey that all triathletes take in order to compete. My story will also try to show the emotions that triathletes feel on triathlon morning. People from all backgrounds and physical abilities compete in triathlons but we all share the same emotions on triathlon morning.
[edit] Media Assets
For the introduction to my story, I will briefly describe my state of mind on the morning of my first triathlon. I used Audacity to record and edit my narration. I wanted my narration to be slow paced to build anticipation until my soundtrack and the photos started to display on the screen. I am using music that I found on ccMixter. The name of the song is Revolve and it's by hisboyelroy. The piece of music fits nicely with the Creative Commons photos that I found on Flickr. The music is fast paced and I think provides the anticipatory feeling I was looking for. The photos depict how so many different people compete in triathlons and that is one of the purposes of my story. I will also use text as transitions. I had effects to go with the text but feedback from my peers suggested that I take the effects out because they were distracting. I listend to their advice and took most of the effects out. I think it does clean up my story to have the text staionary. The text are screen shots of words that describe the upcoming photos.
[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition
My pacing will vary. The beginning of my story shows just one picture to match my narration. The rest of the images that will appear are words that describe what my narration is stating. As soon as the music starts, the sequence of photos starts. I purposefully had the pictures in the order of a real triathlon, swim, bike, run. I am using two photos that I hope will make an impact. Both photos were taken during the run portion of a triathlon. One picture shows a triathlete in a wheechair and the next picture shows a runner's feet. I wanted to use these photos together to emphasize that all triathletes despite physical limits must take the same journey to reach the finish line. The pacing is fast because that is what my topic requires. My last photo is of a triathlete crossing the finish line. I have the words "WE TRI" as the last image because that is the mantra of triathletes.
[edit] Narration, Dialogue, and Text
I plan am using voice over narration and text in my video. I will use the narration as an introduction to my story. This is the script: I competed in my first triathlon four years ago. It was considered by most to be a small triathlon- 1/2 mile swim, 13 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run but for me it was the biggest challenge of my life. As I stood at the shoreline waiting for the start gun to go off, every emotion that I had ever felt raced through my body. Fear is what I felt the most but I knew that I had unspoken support and encouragement from the other triathletes. We were all strangers but as we adjusted our goggles for the last time and took a deep breath, we were excited to begin this journey together.
The text I am using (screen shots of words that describe triathletes and the feelings I have while competing)will act as transitions between photos and will set up the feel of upcoming photos.
[edit] Reflection
When I first began to plan my digital story I planned on narrating the entire thing. Once I had it recorded however it did not communicate the excitement or emotion that I thought it would. My voice is very soft and girly and it did not fit well with the topic of my digital story. Then, I found a great piece of music on ccMixter and it totally inspired me. The music made me want to get out and run and I could see how the photos I am using would be a good match with the music. The music is so much more exciting than my voice. I will narrate the beginning of my story but music will be played for most of the story. Any feedback would be helpful, I am not a creative person and the topic that I chose is very different from what most people are doing.
