[edit] Summary
Title: Roberta B's Digital Story Treatment
Description: Looking at my children, I'm thinking about how parents met and got married. I want to look at myself and the images of my kids to my parents while telling a short portion of their story.
[edit] Media Assets
Most of the images I used are pictures from my mother's albums and with her permission. I will also use some pictures of my children I have taken. I have tapes of my parents discussing their engagement that I transcribed. I used their words directly from the transcription. Those are in print over the pictures. My voice is the only narration.
The real key is to set the tone with the music. They married in an era of Broadway and Big Band music. I found one piece that was instrumental and kept the mood and the pictures flowing. In the second piece of music, I decided to let the words of the music carry the last part along.
[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition
I plan to try placing photos of my children and myself going fairly quickly and then slowing the pace as the pictures of parents first appear separately. I'll go through their story with the image and voiceover slowly. The boyfriend pictures go quickly and then slow as we get to my father. After the wedding photos, I'm adding photos of my parents with my children. Then a very quick series of pictures of my parents through the years. The end result uses text and voice over combination to minimize the voice.
[edit] Narration, Dialogue, and Text
The narration is mine. My parents words are displayed in text format.
Narration
When I look at my children, I see in their faces the faces of generations past. And I can see my mother, a young woman, full of life and fun. ............ One night she met a man on a blind date. He was handsome, fit and smart. ............... I asked my father, “Why did you ask HER to marry you?” ............ I asked my mother why she accepted. ............... Each of my children carries a seed of those two.
[edit] Reflection
I started with exactly 150 word narration and felt that was as small as it could go. However, once I started putting the pictures together I realized that the music drove the pace and set the emotions. The narration is now in short, separate pieces, which is easier to redo. It also has a bigger effect. Even though we did the little movie project, there is still a huge technical hill to climb while trying to incorporate creativity.
[edit] Draft Media
I have an initial version ready to go. I know the story. Does it come across to others?
Draft #[1]
Draft 2 - I mixed up the final pictures alternating short picture of my parents together and longer pause on pics of my parents with the kids. I think it's more effective. I'll leave both up if anyone wants to comment on the difference.
Draft #[2]
Draft 3 - I'm going to look for different music instead of "Happiness". Also I want to change all of the text to the Blue text used in the middle.
Hopefully, I've incorporated most of the comments. One question is should I leave in the pictures of my parents with my kids or delete it. I wasn't sure with the change in music and other changes. Thanks for looking!
