[edit] Summary

Title: As the Sun Sets on the Pavelow

Image:Pavelow in a sandstormthumbnail.jpg

Description: The might MH-53 Pavelows will be decommissioned later this year. As a Pavelow wife, I want to pay tribute to all of the brave pilots, flight engineers, gunners and maintaners who have flown or worked on the Pavelow. This digital story is from my perspective, looking at why the men of the Pavelow community risk their lives to protect us. They do so much that many will never know about, I felt this was a way that I could honor to them for all they have done.

[edit] Media Assets

My digital story includes photos taken by my husband and I, photos and videos found on the Pavelow Website, as well as photos from the Hurlburt Field Website. I also used one photo from flicker of a war protester. I was very careful in choosing images and video for this project. I am going to be showing it to the memebers of the Pavelow community so it has to be exteremly accurate or they will let me know. I also felt it was important to include pictures that had personal meaning. Using pictures that I have taken, and ones that my husband has taken on his "trips", brought this to a more personal level. Using pictures from the Pavelow website and the Air Force website, opened it up so that others veiwing it would have a connection as well.

[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition

Flying aboard a Pavelow is a fast-paced exciting job. The photos in my digital story move fairly quickly to show this to the viewer. The music that I chose I did not like at first, but after listening to it and refining my digital story, I really like it and think it adds to the upbeat pace of my video. The order of my photos and video goes along with my narration. In ordering them this way, I hope to add more meaning to the photos and videos instead of just sticking a picture there for filler.

[edit] Narration, Dialogue, and Text

I am the narrator, a Pavelow wife. I am sharing my thoughts on why these men would put their lives at risk. here is my script.

  • I am a Pavelow wife.
  • As the sun sets on the time of the mighty Paves I look back and wonder Why?
  • Why do these brave men, our husbands, brothers, and fathers risk their lives for us?
  • Why do they leave home……and go to foreign lands where danger can lurk just across a fence.
  • Where home is a box in the heat.
  • This is their office, and this is the briefcase they carry to work each day.
  • Finding sleep when they can
  • Having fun in the few moments they can?
  • I think to myself why
  • Is it Honor?
  • Duty?
  • Courage?
  • Pride?
  • Family?
  • Brotherhood?
  • Or Country?
  • And then, I realize it is all of those things that drives them to do what they do.
  • For those who don’t always agree with their mission and whose who support them unconditionally.
  • And for those who serve with them.
  • But I can’t help think that there is another reason. After much though it occurred to me…
  • They do this…
  • Because they get to blow stuff up!

[edit] Reflection

I think my final draft turned out fantastic! I think it really tells the story of the Pavelow community and honors them for all of their sacrifices. I did change several pictures to mke the flow better and to give it more meaning. I was able to find other pictures to take the place of the ones that I really didn't like in the rough draft. In my rough draft, I really did not like the music I put with it, but after listening to it more and reworking my digital story, I realized it is just what I wanted. It really adds to the video much more than I thought it did in the beginning. Overall, I am very proud of my digital story and think that I accomplished my goal of honoring in a fun way, the brave men who fly on the Pavelows.

I used Adobe Premiere Elements to create my digital story.

[edit] Copyrighted Materials

I was not sure of the copyright on the pictures I used from the Pavelow websight so before starting the project, I contacted the webmaster and he has given me permission to use any photos and videos that I need for my project. Photos taken from the Air Force websight are considered public domain because they are owned by the federal government. I checked with a military photographer on this information. All other aspects, photos and sounds are creative commons licensed.
