Media Exercise 4
From LIS5313
Creative Commons and Basic Wiki Editing (Due: Feb. 5)
Contents |
Task
- This week's exercise involves two parts:
- Part A: Creative Commons Scavenger Hunt
- AND
- Part B: Basic Wiki Editing
Steps
Part A: Creative Commons Scavenger Hunt
- This task involves searching for video and audio assets that have Creative Commons licenses or are in the Public Domain. The exercise is also intended to familiarize you with archives that are exemplary in their efforts to provide an infrastructure for people to upload, search, and share Creative Commons materials, as well as materials in the Public Domain in the case of the Internet Archive.
- Read the three posts listed below, and follow their instructions for finding and commenting on the relevant audio or video asset:
- You must provide a comment to each of these posts to complete Part A of the exercise.
Part B: Basic Wiki Editing
- This task involves setting up an account on our class wiki and editing your own user page.
- Begin by going to: Create an Account. The username you select is what others in the class will see when you edit something or leave a comment for someone on the wiki, so please choose a username that follows the same convention that we have on the blog (e.g. your first name + the first initial of your last name).
- Next, edit your own user page so that it reflects the same basic information about yourself that you posted on the blog as part of Media Exercise 1, but this time edited and reformatted for the wiki.
- Your user page should include:
- Use of header text (Note: this is called "Level 2 headline" in your editing toolbar)
- Use of bold text
- Use of at least two external links, with appropriate link text (Note: this means two links to other websites)
- Use of at least one bulleted list
- You may include other kinds of formatting as well if you wish, but do not include a photo at this time.
- For an example of what your user page might look like, you can see my user page: Ltripp.
- To find and edit your user page, click on your username in the top right corner of the wiki. The first time you access the page, it will open in "edit mode" and you can begin typing and formatting your page. After you save your page, you can return to edit mode by clicking the "edit" button on the top left part of the wiki page.
- You are encouraged to view and copy formatting code from other wiki pages. This is often a good way to learn new formatting techniques. You might also find it useful to review Wiki Help Resources.
- Once you have completed editing your wiki user page, please provide a link to your page on Student Wiki Pages.
Submission Instructions
- When you have completed the exercise (including Part A and B), please submit the assignment in Blackboard > Assignments > Media Exercise 4. Click "View/Complete Assignment." In the "Comments" box, provide your wiki username. Click submit.
- The Exercise is due at midnight EST on the due date (Feb. 5).
- Note: You will only get credit for your work if you complete the assignment submission process in Blackboard.
