[edit] Summary
Title: High Stakes
Description: My digital story is about growing up playing golf with my dad. I hope to show how golf for us was a bonding experience through which we grew closer together. We also created a bet that has continued for 25 years. We have a tradition of gambling for a slurpee(R) on the last hole. People who see our competition on the last hole would think we are betting for a car, a lot of money, or some valuable trophy. No...for the coveted slurpee(R) we usually block out the outside world and turn in our best score of the day. Just to be able to claim the bragging rights of the slurpee(R).
[edit] Media Assets
My picture assets are from flickr. The background music is from ccmixter and the sound effects are from soundtransit.
A few pictures I used are picutres that my dad took at the local golf course. Most of the pictures are pretty literal. I also turned the beginning photos black and white to represent older times. I left the photos "in present day" in color. I think the photos provide literal meanings.
I used less literal photos for the competition segment of the video. I used photos that evoked emotions that might have been felt during the competition.
I created the video using Adobe Premier Pro and coverted using software from ZJ media.
[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition
In the beginning, I start off sentimental. Then, when I talk about the tradition that my dad I have with trying to win a slurpee(R), the rythm speeds. This is partly to show the adreline in the competition. I also think it is fun because it isn't so sentimental. I changed the pacing of the audio and the pacing of the pictures for the final video. I also used less literal golf pictures that evoked the emotions of hope, victory, defeat, and competition.
I worked on the transitions and re-edited the narrative. Dr. Tripp had suggested I might consider cutting out the second part of the video, but that felt too abrupt to me. I tried to edit the upbeat section of the video to make it more connecting. I also eliminated the stretching "sensation" in the photos by allowing them not to conform to the size of the video screen.
My computer crashed and I had finished this version of the file prior to. Although there are is one thing I would like to further edit, I don't want to risk the computer...so I will turn it in as is.
[edit] Narration, Dialogue, and Text
I grew up playing golf. My dad loved golf. And I became his golfing buddy. Over the years, my perspective has changed. When I was little and my golf ball would get stuck in a sand trap, I would often think I was on an endless beach.
Through the years and many hours that my dad and I spent on the golf course, we bonded and created many traditions. There is one tradition that has remained the same....the stakes that we play for on the 18th hole…………… So, if you are out playing golf one day and you see me and my dad on the 18th hole…go ahead and challenge us. We know what the stakes are!
[edit] Reflection
This was a very emotional process on so many levels. Thinking of a story that you are comfortable sharing might be hard for some as it was for me. Also, I was unsure if people who didn't play golf could connect. I think I realized through this project that almost any story can connect with its audience if it is presented well. I hope my presentation improved and I look forward to further improvements in the future.
I want to do more of these videos and work on making presentations that connect with people. But, I think I will be investing in a MAC first.
P.S. - Any thoughts from the MAC lovers? ;)

[edit] Copyrighted Materials
I didn't use any copyrighted materials. I used a creative commons' photo of a slurpee(R) and the slurpee(R) name itself is a registered trademark. I have placed a credit that states that slurpee(R) is a registered trademark of 7-Eleven(R) in my video.
Note: I called and talked to the person in charge of trademarks for 7-Eleven(R). They stated that because I am using a picture of their product widely available on the internet and, not the product itself, that they have no authority over the picture of their product.
- From Lisa T: I think that's so cool that you investigated and got an answer from the source itself! Great job.Ltripp 21:59, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
