[edit] Summary
Title: October Wedding
Prompt: A
Description: This is a story tol in first person about an experience I had while watching a Korean traditional wedding. I want to tell this story because it illustrates how beautiful the ceremony was, as well as how lost I can get sometimes. This story will hopefully capture the feeling of being out on a fall day, of watching a life-changing moment, and of being a bit surprised as well. I also hope to capture certain contrasts, such as young children and old ginko trees, falling leaves and flying birds, and being at peace and being startled.
[edit] Media Assets
I will use music, text, sound effects, and photos from Flickr and Stock.xchng to tell this story. Many of the images will give the viewer an idea of what a traditional Korean wedding is like. Other images are meant to portray what the setting looked and felt like on a fall day. Hopefully, the images will give a sense of context and feeling, while the text gives the details of what is happening. The song, “Photo Theme: Windowlike” by Antony Raijekov is a soft relaxing piece. However the “File Wood” sound effect (The_Bizniss at TheFreeSoundProject) portrays the startled feeling at the end. The “Doh!” sound effect was a recording of my own voice. I modified it on Audacity to make it sound lower.
[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition
Overall, I try to keep the pacing of the transitions slow enough to be relaxing but not boring. However, when it comes to the transitions with the leaves and birds I made them fast and abrupt in an attempt to capture the fluttery movement that both have. At the end, I also have an abrupt transition to a squinty-eyed face to emphasize the startled, sheepish feeling that comes with being in the wrong place. This visual transition is complemented by a sudden transition from the music to the sound effect "File Wood".
[edit] Narration or Dialogue
I chose not to use narration at all. However, the text will tell the story as follows: Today, I went to watch a friend get married. It was a traditional Korean ceremony. Nervous children stood in hanboks. The red-cheeked bride was carried in a small box. Kids played under ancient ginko trees. While the leaves fell… And the birds flew. My friend, the groom, remained hidden from sight, Soon my husband came up behind me, and whispered softly in my ear… “You’re at the wrong wedding.” I received some suggestions to put in a track of my husband whispering “You’re at the wrong wedding.” I experimented with this idea a bit. However, after watching both versions, I decided showing his words as text is more consistent with the rest of the piece.
[edit] Reflection
This is the first digital story that I’ve ever created, and it has been a steep learning curve! I’ve enjoyed expressing myself through this medium for several reasons. It has made me aware of the wealth of resources that are published under a creative commons license. This medium allows one to be so much more creative, and to more accurately portray a mood or impression. Also, the programs that I used can be useful in a number of professional or personal settings. Finally, I've noticed that as I work on this piece, it seems to take on a life and direction of its own. Many of the things that worked out well started out as accidents, so I think I’ve been lucky in that respect. After making htis video, I feel like I have a whole new insight into what kind of possibilities exist for getting a message across.
One major hurdle in this piece has been making the text legible, without letting it detract from the images. I took the suggestions of my classmates and experimented with adding text through Gimp. This worked okay, but the images and text seemed too incongruent. I also experimented with adding outlines to the text through the program Sony Vegas Movie Studio. While I'm still worried that the text may be distracting, it has made it easier to read. Any comments on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Of course, any other feedback is also helpful!
