[edit] Summary

Title: The Value of a Cupcake

Image: [View Image Here]

Description: This story is a visual reproduction and connection I have made to a story my grandfather told before his passing last summer. His story involved the joy his family had during the Great Depression when they were able to splurge to purchase a weekly package of cupcakes. This story is important to me because it made me feel a connection between the family values I have been brought up with and those instilled in the family of my grandfather when he was a child.

[edit] Media Assets

I have compiled photos of my grandfather throughout the years to use as the visual aspect of my story. I also had planned to purchase a package of the cupcakes and take my own digital video in order to incorporate a key factor of the story. I may or may not use text overlay to draw attention to specific portions of the photos. As far as audio is concerned, I plan on using CCMixer or another type of free license music to use in my background. The music I will use will be light and simply an element to add joy to the piece. I think xylophone or some other type of "plinky-plunky" music would be fitting. I have considered taking a digital video to use to demonstrate how my grandfather would pull the cupcakes apart to make sure he got the most icing. I will use audacity to record my narration or record my narration directly into my editing software.

Here is a sound clip I found on Freesound that may work: [Piano Music]

[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition

Once I find the right music, I would like my pacing to correlate with music and narration. At spots during the narration, I visualize specific pictures adding to the emotional aspect of my story. My photos will cover time periods, therefore they will appear to show growth in age as they are displayed.

I looked at some storyboards from things people posted in class but I wound up opening a WORD document, inserting my pictures, and noting which part of my narration I would say at that point. It worked for me but there are probably many better ways to storyboard.

I was able to read my narration using my "storyboard" and then added my music. It fits quite well, but the cuts are made to match narration, not the music.

[edit] Narration, Dialogue, and Text

In Philadelphia, during the Depression, my grandfather loved the day each week when he was given a nickel to buy Tastykake cupcakes to share with his siblings. After tearing open the package, he would let them take the end cupcakes and he would take the middle cake. He secretly knew the middle cupcake always had extra icing on the sides, but he kept that to himself. After he passed away last summer, I thought of this story and it made me think of how simple things were back then and how happy a simple package of cupcakes could make a group of children. This and other experiences my grandparents went through during the depression helped to guide my parents into a way of sensible living. I thank them for raising me to appreciate the value of education, the value of a dollar, and most importantly, the value of the middle cupcake!

[edit] Reflection

Using the photos I have collected and some photos from Flickr, I feel the plan I have for my edits will look great once put together. I could use some advice on choosing music. The only thought I have in my head reminds me of the type of music Apple uses in their commercials.

  • 3/19/08 Update: I am almost finished and I really like what I have done. I am impressed with how much better at editing I have become. Once I post, please let me know if you think I should use some kind of transition (fade) between shots or if the sharp cuts work better with the narration (I think the sharp cuts look good)
  • 3/21/08 Update: I love all the feedback I have gotten so far. I had tried to create a 'video" showing me opening the cupcakes and displaying the extra icing but the cupcakes I received in the mail (they are regional to the Northeast) did not ship well. I am going to look in a few more places in South Florida that may sell them then I am going to get creative. I am in the process of deciding which photos to keep in the project and which to leave aside.

[edit] Draft Media

Provide a bulleted list of links here to drafts of your video, excerpts from your video, and/or media assets used in your video, that are ready for comments and feedback. List the most recent drafts, excerpts, or media assets first. Also state what kind of feedback would be most useful to you. For your initial draft treatment, provide a few links to any important media assets that you are using in your video (or considering using). Also provide a brief description of the media. When possible, please embed thumbnail versions of image assets directly within the wiki page itself (as opposed to just providing a link).
