[edit] Creative Commons Audio Assets
When someone gives their creative work a Creative Commons license, it means they are giving permission to other people to copy, share, and/or adapt their creative work in some circumstances. To learn more about the different types of Creative Commons licenses available, visit Creative Commons Licenses. Below is a list of useful sites for finding Creative Commons licensed audio.
- CC Mixter offers a range of music with Creative Commons licenses. There are basic and advanced search tools on the site (so you can search for genre, tempo, particular instruments, etc.), and you can also browse the Editor's Picks. To download an audio file that you like, go to the main information page of the audio file (see for example: Recommencer Info Page). On the right side of the page, you should see two gray buttons. The top one says "Stream." The bottom one typically says "mp3." Depending on your web browser, the steps for downloading the audio file may vary. Often, you can Right click (or CTRL+Click) the "mp3" button, and then select "Save Target As." This lets you name the file and decide where to download it. If "Save Target As" is not one of your options, you should be able to download the audio by clicking on the "mp3" button and going to a page where the audio loads in Quicktime. After the audio finishes loading, right click (or CTRL click) the upside-down triangle on the right side of the audio player, and select "Save as Source." This will let you save the audio file to your computer.
- The Freesound Project is a collaborative database of Creative Commons licensed sounds (not music). It has over 37,000 sound clips with Creative Commons Sampling Plus licenses which are OK for you to use for your media projects. You can search the site without logging in, but you must register and login in order to download sounds. The search and browsing tools for the website are on the left sidebar. To download a sound you like, you first need to setup an account. Freesound keeps a record of all of your downloads which is extremely helpful when it comes time to give another artist attribution for sounds you’ve used. You can find the list of your downloads under the Control Panel > Attribution List.
- SoundTransit is a collaborative, online community dedicated to field recording and phonography. On this site, you can plan a sonic journey through various locations recorded around the world, or you can search the database for specific sounds by different artists from certain places. If you are a phonographer, you can also contribute your recordings for others to enjoy. All sounds on the website have a Creative Commons Attribution license to encourage sharing and remixing.
- Creative Commons Audio Content Directory lists many other websites that contain audio with Creative Commons licenses or in the Public Domain. Note that many of these sites will contain audio with a range of different types of licenses, some of which you can use for your projects and some of which you cannot. Feel free to use audio content in your project that you find from any source, so long as you have verified that it is either in the public domain or has a license giving you permission to use it.
- The Internet Archive Audio Archive collection has over 116,000 items that range from alternative news programming, to Grateful Dead concerts, to Old Time Radio shows, to book and poetry recordings, to original music contributed by users. Licenses in the collection vary, so check to make sure an item allows derivatives.
