[edit] Summary
Title: Washing Away the Stuff
Description: My digital story is about how material things seemed so important to me. I felt as though I could not live without my belongings. However, after Hurricane Rita, I was left to comprehend the event, cope with its aftermath, and finally begin to rebuild my life. I realized that the material things are not so important. That there are more important things, like life itself.

I use narration (my own voice) to "fill in the blanks" that the pictures and music cannot.
My main goal is to stay away from sadness and convey more of a nostalgia in the beginning, then a more urgent nature in the middle, and finally a more upbeat but thoughtful feeling at the end.
[edit] Pacing, Rhythm, and Juxtaposition
I have used pacing and rhythm in my story to enhance the story. I have used images from prior to Hurricane Rita and after Hurricane Rita to show the terrible conditions which we faced. I also hurried the pace in the middle about Rita itself to convey how quickly the hurricane came and how quickly it went.
[edit] Narration, Dialogue, and Text
I have always felt a close connection to what I call my “stuff”. A knickknack, a plate, a table, even a blanket. It is as though each item I owned held a sacred bond to my past and, if I lost or gave away the item, I would lose the memories of my life.
On September 25, 2005, Hurricane Rita tore through Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, where my partner and I lived.
We could not get to our house for 4 days due to the massive flooding. When we did get there, it was by boat.
90% of our possessions were destroyed by the water and mud. Another 5% by mold. Books, pictures, great grandmother’s table, antiques, clothes. All cherished mementos of the past.
We, as with many other hurricane victims, have had to rebuild our lives. Replace clothes, appliances, televisions. Rebuild our book collection. Find a place to live. And as we do this, I find a sort of hilarity to our situation. And I find that I am no longer quite so attached to my belongings, my “stuff”.
As for southern Louisiana, it has been reported that the Margarita has usurped the Hurricane as the drink of choice during a Hurricane.
[edit] Reflection
I have enjoyed this process but have found it very time consuming. I am very happy with the end result of my digital story.
